Invasion out of the blue: when my sister’s family moved in without being asked

I had no idea that my own family would attack my house. But that’s exactly what happened when my sister Holly and her family showed up without warning and planned to stay for a long time.

Holly and I were close when we were kids, but after she got married, things changed. Nicholas, her husband, and their two kids were always going on a new journey. They were always telling people to enjoy life to the fullest.

They were taking things out of boxes and bags in my living room when I got home from work. My safe place, my space, had been broken into.

She said that our mom gave her my extra key in case of an emergency, but I knew she wasn’t telling the truth. They had already abused my kindness once, and I wasn’t going to let it happen again.

Nicholas’s sense of privilege was crazy. His words, “Family supports family, right?” made them sound like their actions were okay.

I told them they had to leave, but they wouldn’t. I texted an old friend, Alex, to ask for help at that point.

By chance, Alex showed up dressed as a police officer because of a costume party. Holly and Nicholas were scared when they saw his fake ID and saw how sure he seemed.

“Officer” Alex told them to leave because they were breaking and entering and trespassing. They quickly packed up, said sorry, returned the extra key, and ran away.

I felt both relieved and guilty as I watched them drive off. Did I do the right thing?

Alex said to me, “You can’t let them take advantage of you because their harebrained scheme failed.” He was right; putting myself first was fine.

I learnt a useful lesson from the situation: it’s important to set limits with family. No one, not even my sister, could take away my home. I had worked hard for it.
In the end, I learnt that it’s okay to say no to family sometimes. It also helps to have friends like Alex, who will save the day by dressing up as a police officer.
