Experts Break Down ‘Hotwifing’ Trend And Warn About Its Deep Emotional Risks

The unconventional ‘trend’ isn’t for everyone…

There’s a new trend in the world of sex and relationships that some say is actually helping to keep marriages alive, but experts are cautioning that it’s definitely not the right fit for every couple. From time to time, new trends pop up in the realm of intimacy—shibari being one of the more well-known ones.

Now, another practice is gaining attention, and it’s called ‘hotwifing’. While some claim it’s strengthening their connection with their partner, others warn it could completely ruin a relationship.

What is ‘hotwifing’?

You’ve likely come across the term hot-desking before. It’s the idea that office workers don’t have designated desks—they just use whichever one is available.

‘Hotwifing’ follows a similar concept, except instead of rotating desks, it involves wives being sexually shared with the consent of their spouses.

To break it down simply, it means a wife engages in sexual activity with another man, but only after getting approval from her husband or long-term partner.

One man who has allowed his wife to explore this nontraditional arrangement said it reminded him of the idea of letting a buddy take your car for a spin, according to Mail Online.“He gets to see how well it rides. He’s got to give it back, but it creates a sense of pride. You get a little taste of what my life is like.”

Why are couples trying ‘hotwifing’?

Many people say that ‘hotwifing’ has helped them rediscover passion in their sex lives, experience emotional development, and feel more confident—especially for women who feel more desired and valued.

Often, couples turn to this type of arrangement due to a lack of sexual fulfillment or feeling emotionally disconnected from one another.

Priyanka Kapoor, who is a Psychotherapist, Psychologist, and Sex Therapist based in Mumbai, explained to NDTV: “Sometimes, issues like erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation in men may lead to such arrangements. In other cases, it’s sexual boredom that motivates the shift.”

What have experts said about ‘hotwifing’?

Although some couples have claimed that ‘hotwifing’ brought them closer and saved their relationships, professionals in the mental health field caution that the practice can backfire in a big way.

Dr Neetu Tiwari, a Psychiatrist at NIMS Medical College and Hospital, shared this warning: “Like any kink, hotwifing can be very pleasurable — and very intense. But it can also go horribly wrong. Especially when emotions like jealousy and resentment enter the picture.”

Kapoor also highlighted another potential risk: “In some cases, women may become emotionally invested in the new partner. Women often connect through personality, humour, or lifestyle, not just the physical.”

“If the emotional bond develops, infidelity starts — even if it began as consensual non-monogamy.”To reduce the chances of this kind of situation unfolding, professionals suggest having honest and open conversations with your partner before giving ‘hotwifing’ a try.

This includes talking about the possibility of catching deeper feelings for someone outside of your current relationship.
