Sad news for drivers over 70, they will soon no longer be able!

In the UK, turning 70 isn’t just a milestone — it can mean losing key driving entitlements. When drivers renew their licence at 70, the DVLA automatically removes categories like C1 (vehicles over 3,500kg) and D1 (minibuses). This change affects those who rely on motorhomes, horseboxes, or community transport, potentially grounding them overnight.

The loss isn’t always clearly communicated, and many only realise after their renewal. To retain these entitlements, drivers must complete forms D2 and D4 (including a medical exam), and in some cases, pass further tests — a process that can feel daunting, especially for older drivers.

Larger lorry (category C) drivers face stricter rules, needing to retake their practical test. Even for motorhomes, heavier models (3,500–7,500kg) require a valid C1 licence post-70. Without the correct steps, travel and retirement plans can stall.

Experts urge those nearing 70 to plan early. Review your licence, arrange medical checks, and understand what’s needed to retain your rights. Ignoring the rules could leave you uninsured — or even breaking the law.

The message is clear: if you want to keep driving larger vehicles beyond 70, take action before it’s too late.
