When I discovered a barcode on my husband Daniel’s back, I thought it might be a clue to his betrayal, but scanning it revealed a heartbreaking truth. We’d just learned I was pregnant with our first baby, but Daniel had grown distant. Always “busy” with work, he seemed to be slipping away from me.One night, after a long trip, I noticed a faint barcode on his back. Fearing the worst, I scanned it with my phone, which led to a message saying, “Call me ASAP. He has just months.” My heart sank, and I called the number, reaching Dr. Evans, who revealed that Daniel had stage-four pancreatic cancer. Daniel hadn’t told me because he didn’t want to worry me, especially with the baby. The doctor confessed she had placed the barcode on him as a way for me to find out, believing Daniel couldn’t bring himself to tell me. It was a painful secret, but it allowed me to spend more time with him before it was too late. The next day ,I suggested a getaway for us. We visited a lake cabin and spent time reconnecting, enjoying the little moments. We painted the nursery together, laughing and sharing memories, but his health rapidly declined. In his final days, he whispered an apology, and I reassured him that he had given us everything. After he passed, I sat at his funeral, feeling the weight of his absence but also the comfort of his love, knowing it would live on in our child. I promised him that I would make sure our baby knew how much he had loved us.
