Rep. Ilhan Omar has faced substantial backlash for the guidance she has given to Somalians living in the United States illegally. A video recently went viral on X showing Omar speaking, in what is presumably the Somali language, at a seminar to Somalians on how to evade deportation. The Minnesota Democrat encouraged those residing here illegally to not comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if questioned.
“If ICE attempts to question you, you are not obligated to answer their questions. Just state that you are advised by a lawyer not to answer questions,” Omar told a reporter. “Disclosure of your name, immigration status, and the mode of entry is not mandatory. Learn the laws and prepare yourself and refrain from disclosing information that you prefer them not to know,” she added.
Conservative commentator Ian Miles Cheong shared the clip to X, writing, “Ilhan Omar is conducting seminars for Somalians who are living illegally in the U.S. without documentation, providing guidance on how to evade deportation.” The video has since garnered well over 50 million views and thousands of comments, slamming Omar’s advice. Cheong added, “How is this not illegal?”
Multi-billionaire Tesla founder and owner of X Elon Musk responded to the controversy, asserting that Omar is outright breaking the law. Musk wrote, “She is breaking the law. Literally. Outright.” Others have taken it a step further, suggesting Omar should be deported from the country. MAGA congressman Rep. Brandon Gill wrote, “America would be a better place if @IlhanMN were deported back to Somalia.” He added, “We should have never let Ilhan Omar into our country.
The American Tribune reported on comments from another prominent Democratic leader, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, who claimed to have been housing someone residing in the United States illegally. “I don’t want to get into too much detail, but there’s someone in our broader universe whose immigration status is not yet at the point that they are trying to get it to and we said, ‘You know what, let’s have her live at our house above our garage.’” He added, “And good luck to the feds coming in to try to get her.”
However, Trump administration border czar Tom Homan addressed the claims from Murphy, claiming he would investigate the governor over the remarks. “I think the Governor is pretty foolish saying what he said,” Homan said, implying the comment, seemingly taunting federal authorities within the Trump administration, would come back to haunt him.

The border czar cited the very law that Murphy was violating if his claim was true. “Because I got note of it, won’t let it go, we’ll look into it. And if he’s knowingly harboring and concealing an illegal alien, that’s a violation of Title 8 of the United States Code 1324,” Homan explained. “I will seek prosecution — or the secretary will seek prosecution. So, maybe he’s bluffing. If he’s not, we’ll deal with that,” he added.
Homan has maintained in other comments that he is prepared to legally punish anyone who stands in the way of his deportation operations. Democratic Mayor of Denver, Colorado, Mike Johnston, had previously indicated that he would be willing to go to jail for protecting illegal immigrants. Homan responded by vowing that he would be willing to follow through with such an action.
