A video from 2021 recently resurfaced, showing President Joe Biden getting booed as he entered his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Biden often employs a narrative that he hails from a blue-collar Pennsylvania background, presumably to win over votes in the critical swing state.
“Today, I’m heading back home to Scranton. It’s where my values — of hard work and treating others with dignity — were set. Those values are at the core of my agenda,” Biden wrote on Twitter in October 2021. “See you soon, Scranton,” he added.
However, as Joe Biden’s motorcade pulled into the Pennsylvania city, he was met with a small crowd shouting and booing him. It was clear not everyone in Biden’s hometown was buying his “Build Back Better” agenda that he often touted at the time.
Video captured from the event shows that hardly anyone showed up to celebrate the president’s arrival, aside from those booing him. Social media users were quick to point out a commonly held criticism against Biden that despite receiving over 80 million votes in the 2020 election, he can’t seem to manage drawing large crowds comparable to former president Donald Trump.
“85 million votes huh? Where the hell are they?” one person commented under the video. “81 million votes. He can’t get 10 people to stand on a corner,” another Twitter user said, echoing a similar sentiment. “Look at the crowds! 81 million votes,” another individual wrote, employing sarcasm.
According to recent reports, negative opinions toward Biden, particularly on issues such as the economy, are pervasive in crucial swing states ahead of the upcoming presidential election. This is undoubtedly a troubling sign for Biden’s campaign, given how important the economy is to many voters.
The American Tribune reported on a panel of undecided voters from a handful of different states, including Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, who lamented the state of the economy under the Biden administration. The group of “undecideds” unanimously favored Trump over Biden on economic issues.
Specifically, Pennsylvania voters on the panel illustrated the challenging state of the economy they have personally observed in the state. One individual named Virginia lamented the interest rate environment that has substantially cooled business activity.
“We have areas here in Pennsylvania where it’s just at a standstill right now. Like, things are supposed to be being built and the interest rates are just way too high for people to, you know, invest and start moving around,” Virginia said. “The interest rate is so high right now and I know they’re trying to cut the inflation down, but like, if nobody is building, no businesses are really coming to Pennsylvania right now to keep us moving forward.”
Another Pennsylvania voter named Gigi complained that it doesn’t feel as if Biden has taken any accountability for the state of the economy.“I feel like he doesn’t even take accountability at all with what’s going on,” she said. “Not even accountability, like he’s in denial that it’s happening.”
This sentiment, demonstrated by the booing in Scranton and opinions from undecided voters, ostensibly suggests that Trump has a solid chance of outperforming Biden in many key swing states in the 2024 election.
