Bride wears grandma’s wedding dress from 1961 down the aisle – that she stored in a garbage bag

A lot of girls find themselves dreaming of their wedding day. And one of the most important things they think about is their wedding dress. For most women, they usually have a very specific idea of what they want to wear.

And this bride knew exactly what she wanted to wear as well…

23-year-old Allie Livingwater was going through her grandmother’s cellar in 2016 when she found something incredibly precious in a garbage bag. She knew right upon seeing it that one day she would wear that very dress down the aisle herself.

Five years later when she was engaged to Timothy Livingwater, she knew it was time to take out the dress. Her grandmother had worn the dress to her own wedding about 60 years earlier and now, Allie would be wearing it again.
On September 25th, Allie wore the special dress and couldn’t have been happier! And her grandmother was similarly ecstatic, having been the one to give Allie her “something old” and “something borrowed” with her dress.

After the dress had been professionally cleaned, it fit Allie like a glove with no adjustments needed at all. The only change Allie made was to put a hoop skirt underneath.

Her grandmother was of course, moved to tears at watching her granddaughter walk down the aisle at Turners Falls in her wedding dress.

Allie Livingwater took to Facebook to talk about her wedding and the significance of her dress. She posted a side-by-side of her grandmother and herself in the dress, to show everyone what it looked like.

She mentioned how her wedding would be an event that she would remember for the rest of her life because of how special it was.

Allie has a very special bond with her grandma as she had lived with her since she was born. The family moved in with Allie’s grandmother after she became widowed after 38 years of marriage. And while Allie had never even met her grandfather, she felt closer to him wearing her grandmother’s wedding dress.

Allie’s grandmother was overcome with emotion because she never imagined her dress would be worn to another wedding, let alone her granddaughters. She had written it off, thinking it would never be of any use again.

What a beautiful story and what a tender moment shared between grandmother and granddaughter. I hope everyone has a relationship like this with their grandparent.

Share this wonderful story to inspire other brides to wear heirloom dresses on their big day!
