Why should you throw a bottle of water under the bed as soon as you check into a hotel?

When checking into a hotel, it’s important to conduct a quick but thorough inspection to ensure your safety. Most people usually check the room, bathroom, and toilet for necessary amenities and hidden devices like cameras. However, one area often overlooked is under the bed — a potential safety risk for guests.

Esther, a Dutch flight attendant with years of experience at KLM, shared a useful tip. Each time she checks into a hotel, she throws a bottle of water under the bed as a precaution. This simple action helps her detect whether anyone or anything suspicious is hiding underneath.

To try this method, toss a water bottle forcefully from one side of the bed. If the bottle rolls smoothly to the other side, there are likely no obstructions. But if it stops or gets stuck, it may indicate someone or something is under the bed.

In such a case, avoid bending down to look immediately. Instead, step back, leave the room if necessary, and contact hotel staff or security to check the area with you. This approach gives you time to react calmly and safely.

Throwing a bottle is also less risky than bending to inspect the space yourself, which could put you in a vulnerable position if someone were hiding there. Acting cautiously can prevent unpleasant or dangerous surprises.

Besides safety, checking under the bed also helps assess the room’s cleanliness. This area is often neglected by cleaning staff, allowing dust, trash, or even pests to accumulate.

A quick check ensures you’re staying in a well-maintained, hygienic environment. If you find dirt or debris, request another room or ask for extra cleaning service.

In short, inspecting under the bed — even with a simple trick like a rolling bottle — protects your safety, comfort, and peace of mind during your stay.
